چکیده

We used optical experiments and high-speed photography to interpret the origins of tensile fractures that form during dynamic shear rupture in laboratory experiments. Sub-Rayleigh (slower than the Rayleigh wave speed, cR) shear ruptures in Homalite-100 produce damage zones consisting of an array of tensile cracks. These cracks nucleate and grow within cohesive zones behind the tips of shear ruptures that propagate dynamically along interfaces with frictional and cohesive strength, simulating a “strong” fault. The tensile cracks are produced only along one side of the interface where transient, fault-parallel, tensile stress perturbations are associated with the growing shear rupture tip. Results of this study represent an important potential bridge between geological observations of structures preserved along exhumed faults and theoretical models of earthquake propagation, potentially leading to diagnostic criteria for interpreting velocity, directivity, and static prestress states associated with past earthquakes on exhumed faults. on 2 September 2009 geology.gsapubs.org Downloaded from

Off-fault tensile cracks: A link between geological fault observations, lab experiments, and dynamic rupture models

[1] We examine the local nature of the dynamic stress field in the vicinity of the tip of a semi-infinite sub-Rayleigh (slower than the Rayleigh wave speed, cR) mode II crack with a velocity-weakening cohesive zone. We constrain the model using results from dynamic photoelastic experiments, in which shear ruptures were nucleated spontaneously in Homalite-100 plates along a bonded, precut, and i...

Determination of Tensile Strength and Crack Growth of a Typical Polymer Concrete Using Circular Disc Samples

Cracked and un-cracked Brazilian disc specimens subjected to diametral compression were used for conducting fracture toughness and tensile strength experiments on a polymer concrete (PC) material. The value of mode I fracture toughness (KIc) was determined from the center- cracked Brazilian disc and the indirect tensile strength (σt) was obtained from the un-cracked Brazilian disc specimen. The...

Quasi-static fault growth and cracking in homogeneous brittle rock under triaxial compression using acoustic emission monitoring

This paper describes the localization of deformation acceleration in the period prior to dynamic failure in hornblende schist rock under triaxial compression using acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. Rather than stabilize the failure process by controlling axial stress to maintain a constant rate of AE (for monitoring AE hypocenters) as in previous works [e.g., Lockner et al., 1991], we have ins...

New Perspectives on Crack and Fault Dynamics

Recent observations on the dynamics of crack and fault rupture are described, together with related theory and simulations in the framework of continuum elastodynamics. Topics include con gurational instabilities of tensile crack fronts (crack front waves, disordering, sidebranching), the connection between frictional slip laws and modes of rupture propagation in earth faulting, especially cond...

Three-dimensional Perturbation Solution for a Dynamic Planar Crack Moving Unsteadily in a Model Elastic Solid

A HALF-PLANE CRACK propagates dynamically, nominally in the x direction. along the plane _V = 0 in an unbounded solid subjected to remote loading equivalent to a static stress intensity factor K*. The crack front at time t lies along the arc x = c,,t+a_/‘(z, t) where a,) is a constant velocity, J’(z, t) is an arbitrary function, and E is a small parameter. The crack front speed thus varies alon...
